Ataija is a very fine-grained limestone in a light greyish-beige shade that may present some stylolite’s and thin calcific veins in a scattered manner. This is one of the hardest limestones extracted in Portugal and is characterized by its low absorption coefficient.

Ataija limestone is the main and most popular type, however there several types of this limestone such as: Ataija BeigeAtaija Blue, and Ataija Mixed.

Ataija is not so popular as your “brothers”, Moleanos and Moca Cream, but over the years it has been increasingly used by various buildings around the world, mainly due to low price and higher density. There are three most common types of Ataija, which vary depending on where they are extracted. The most popular are, Ataija Creme, Ataija Blue, and Ataija Mixed.

This stone can be used in projects that require medium quantities, because this stone does not exist in abundance, and has a limited number of quarries where it is possible to extract. On the other hand, it is an extremely versatile stone, can be used in paving with intensive use, internal and external coverings, masonry, stonework, and many others.

Extraction Area

The Ataija limestone is extracted in Portugal, next to a small town called with the same name. The town is located in the center of the country, next to “Serra de Aire e Candeiros”, which is the most important limestone extraction area in Portugal. The quarries of this stone are approximately 1 hour away from the capital of the country, Lisbon.
